Trans-time zone collab between So-Cal sample sister LA Vampires and Wisconsin witchcraft chanteuse Zola Jesus. Despite the distance their sensibilities vibe beautifully. Dub rhythms echo down grimy corridors streaked in tag-teamed howls and croons drenched in spectral delay. It spans a spectrum of bangers (“Bone Is Bloodstone,” “Looking In”), ballads (“In The Desert,” “Vous”), and quasi-covers (“Searching,” “No No No”), with every mood given its due.
Local photographer (and drummer) Caitlin C. Mitchell lends smoky trumpet while additional deep space Moog and production duties come courtesy of City Terrace studio fiend G. Gengras. A dark gem of a 12”, and a gleaming step sideways for both artists.
During the final days of writing my thesis I listened to this album on repeat for hours at a time. It was like being suspended in one eternal moment while all that changed around me were the ripples and eddies of a slowly meandering river. catharina_bee
